International Raceway is now named Richmond Raceway and will be
undergoing a massive renovations project that will feature major changes
to the infield.International Speedway Corporation, the body that
owns RR, has committed to spending $30 million on changes to the
Virginia short track that will include a new garage, a new media center,
shaded structures for fans, both a victory lane and technical
inspection center that will be viewable to spectators, and an innovative
walkway that will allow fans to see the race teams and cars in the
garages.
The newly
renovated infield, based on the design, would be able to accommodate
about 8,800 fans during the course of an afternoon/evening leading up to
the race.
Track officials are aiming to complete
construction and hold the ribbon-cutting for the renovated racetrack by
September 2018 when RR moves into the NASCAR Cup Series’ 10-race playoff
- the Chase - for the first time in the track’s history.
