Economic Impact of Tourism

  • Henrico County captured $993.9 million (+3.2 %) in spending by domestic travelers during 2019, the most of any locality in central Virginia and the fifth highest in Virginia, according to a newly-released study for the Virginia Tourism Corp.
  • “Henrico County continues to be a wonderful place to visit, as our community’s high quality of life, welcoming spirit and robust business climate shine through everything we do,” County Manager John A. Vithoulkas said . “As the latest spending totals show, tourism and sports tourism remain key drivers of our local and regional economies. When visitors spend money in restaurants and other businesses, they help to provide jobs for our residents and much-needed support for schools and a host of other services.”
  • In 2019, Henrico’s hosted 186 tournaments which generated an estimated $66.2 million in local spending.
  • New athletic facilities such as Glover Park and other 2016 bond projects offer Henrico the opportunity to bring in more sports business. In 2019, $60.7M in economic impact was left on the table due to lack of facilities for outdoor sports.
